CHAPTER FOUR
“Why did you send Kellan out on patrol last night?” Campbell couldn’t understand why his mate would pull Kellan away from Ryan on the eve of his eighteenth birthday.
“I didn’t, he volunteered.” Alpha James took his seat at the head of the table and his mate Campbell sat on his right. Tristan and Cade sat on his left since Ethan and William the older brothers and the Betas were out on patrol.
“What?” Campbell was confused Kellan appeared upset to be leaving Ryan last night, but why would he if he chose to leave? He shot Tristan a questioning look and received a thin lipped angry stare in return.
“We have signs of intruders to the north. Kellan was tracking them earlier yesterday. We discussed the need for constant patrols in the area. Kellan asked to lead the patrol last night. I told him it wasn’t necessary, I understood he had a mate to attend to, but he insisted. He said he needed the distance and wanted to get away from Ryan for a while.” James stopped talking as Kellan walked into the room. Tristan glared at Kellan as he entered and took a seat.
“Should I go and get Ryan?” Kellan asked. “Is he on his way?”
Tristan jumped to his feet before Kellan could move. “I’ll go get him.” Kellan sat back down not sure what had just happened, but knew the air between he and Tristan had been tense.
Ryan dressed in his best jeans and white t-shirt he wanted to look fresh and clean and put together this morning. He would be seeing Kellan in a few minutes and he wanted to present himself as a level headed mature individual. He suddenly wanted Kellan to be proud of him. He was adding a little gel to his hair to get it to spike up when Tristan threw his bedroom door open and simply walked in.
“Hey, you could knock. I might have been doing something unseemly.” Ryan smiled, but the expression dropped when he saw the tense anger on his brother’s face. “What’s wrong?”
Tristan walked up to him and looked him square in the face. “Kellan is down stairs.”
“Okay.” Ryan knew there was more
“James said that Kellan volunteered to go out on patrol last night. He didn’t have to go. He told James he wanted to go, he wanted to get away from you for a while.” Tristan took another step closer to Ryan when he saw him shudder and stumble slightly. He caught himself with a hand on the dresser. “You were right about him all along little brother. He doesn’t appreciate or deserve you. I don’t know how you feel about this information, but I am livid.”
Ryan was dumb struck, he couldn’t believe that Kellan had treated him so dismissively. They had made plans for the evening. They were going to go for a walk and set by the lake and spend the night together so Kellan could be the first to wish Ryan a happy birthday. “He wanted
